PROTON LEKIR CONCEPT TO GO INTO PRODUCTION IN 2 YEARS?

It looks like the Proton Lekir Concept might just become a reality in two years – according to Proton Corporate Planning GM Dr Badrulhisham Mohd Ghazali. He told Bernama reporters at a Proton Carnival in Kota Baharu that Proton plans to produce a two-seater “Lotus-like” sports car in 2 years time. The car will be unveiled in about a year to a year and a half’s time.

The Proton Lekir Concept was based on the production Lotus Europa. Word is that the Europa was originally destined to have a Proton badge as well, and internally it was known as the Proton Sepang project. It was launched in 2006. Installed in its midship engine bay is a 2.0 liter turbocharged GM engine making 200 PS and 272Nm of torque, and it took the Europa to 100km/h in 5.8 seconds. An Europa SE was launched in 2008 with 225 PS, 300Nm and more creature comforts.

The Europa wasn’t really a huge success for Lotus and the position of a more refined Lotus has been filled by the Evora. The Europa has since been discontinued. Looks like a derivative of the Europa will continue serving as a Proton “people’s sports car”. I’m sure a 1.6 liter Campro CFE engine could be tuned up to match the GM engine’s 200 horsepower if necessary, perhaps lower in the interest of engine longevity. After all, Proton has already showcased a 200 horsepower 250Nm Campro installed in the Satria Neo R3 Concept, although that tune is still under development.
Look after the jump for pix of the Lekir from KLIMS.

It may be modest compared to glitzier shows in Europe and America, but it certainly did not stop the 2010 edition of the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show, which started in 1977, to rack up its highest attendance ever. After seeing some 28,000 visitors through the turnstiles on the opening day, the show closed on 12 December having attracted the attendance of 321,958 visitors.

“Despite the absence of some brands, overall the event was well received and had an impressive turn-out. We are delighted that exhibitors seized the opportunity to debut their greatest and latest products on a larger platform. With the success of KLIMS ’10, we hope that other brands will be eager to participate in the next show and enable us to further elevate this event,” stated Datuk Aishah Ahmad, Chairman of the KLIMS ’10 Organising Committee and President of MAA.

A KLIMS '10 Gala Night cum MAA 50th Anniversary Celebration dinner was held last week after the show to celebrate its success. Mohd Nor Zainal Abidin had plenty to laugh about after walking away with a Toyota Prius sponsored by UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd as a lucky draw prize. Fadzlina Zubairi and So Mee Chen won a Proton Saga each, also sponsored by Proton as a lucky draw prize.

Prizes were also up for grabs for exhibitors, and Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd, who launched the Insight at the show, was given the Best Booth Award, while UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd and Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd won first runner-up and second runner-up prizes respectively. Amongst the non-automobile booths, Tint Shop (M) Sdn Bhd was named the Best Booth with Ecotint (M) Sdn Bhd and Lec Auto Leather Marketing Sdn Bhd flowing close behind.

Besides Perodua's Bezza and Proton five Pahlawan concepts, KLIMS '10 did not see the debut of any new concepts, although several manufacturers chose to launch new models for our market at the show. Notable launches include the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Peugeot 5008, and Nissan 370Z Roadster.

MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE

New York’s revamped Museum of the Moving Image is reopening its doors on January 15, 2011. As unveiled earlier this year by indieWIRE, the Museum will feature a new 267-seat theater, 68-seat screening room, a number of new galleries, and a collection of screening spaces for video art.
“There is going to be something for everyone during the opening celebrations for Museum of the Moving Image,” Museum Director Rochelle Slovin said in a statement. “From connoisseurs of classic cinema to fans of video games and current TV, from children and their families to New York’s new-media artists. We welcome audiences from all around New York and all around the world to our transformed Museum, which has been so brilliantly designed by Thomas Leeser.”
Celebrations will kick-off with six weeks of inaugural programs in honor of screen culture titled Celebrating the Moving Image. The opening weekend will offer 70mm screenings of Jacques Tati’s “Playtime” and Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Also in the inaugural schedule are screenings of Marcel L’Herbier’s silent-era classic “L’Argent” (with live musical accompaniment from the Mont Alto Orchestra), a screening of John Ford’s recently rediscovered “Upstream,” and a special presentation of Manoel de Oliveira’s “Doomed Love.”
International cinema will receive a spotlight at the Museum with special series like Indian Cinema Showcase and Korean Cinema Now. Avant-garde cinema will also get (much-warranted) attention, with a rare screening of Gregory Markopoulos’s “Eniaios: Cycle Five,” a section of the experimental auteur’s 80-hour-long epic. This marks a good opportunity to see the avant-garde film, which is usually only available in select seasonal screenings in an outdoor venue in rural Greece.
Weekend family matinees and special programs on television will also be part of the slate. David Schwartz, the Museum’s Chief Curator, commented on this eclectic and near-comprehensive focus in a stament, “The opening programs reflect the Museum’s wide scope of programming, encompassing silent films with live music, classic Hollywood cinema, avant-garde film, television, contemporary world cinema, and more. Films will always be shown in the highest quality formats possible. We are opening with a series of restored films from archives around the world, and Celebrating the Moving Image will offer the public many unforgettable experiences.”

PROTON TO LAUNCH TWO-SEATER LOTUS-LIKE SPORTS CAR WITHIN TWO YEARS

Proton Lekir Concept
A two-seater Lotus-like sports car will arrive within two years, complementing the sporty Satria NeoProton’s model range. This piece of information comes from Dr Badrulhisham Mohd Ghazali, Corporate Planning General Manager of Proton, who revealed to thestar three-door hatchback already in newspaper at the ongoing Proton Carnival that the sports car is in its planning stages, requiring “a year or one and a half” before it will be ready for debut.
It sounds like the wishes of many Malaysians could be fulfilled with this Lotus-like sports car. If you recall, on display at the 2010 Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) is the Proton Lekir Concept, which is a Lotus Europa with Proton badges. The Europa has been rendered obsolete with the launch of the Evora, so Proton is said to be ready to offer the Europa, to be renamed and powered by Proton’s new turbocharged Campro engine, to the Malaysian public for less than RM 150K, a significant discount compared with the RM 300K pricing that the Europa used to command in Malaysia.

PROTON SEES INSPIRING SALES

ALOR STAR: Proton has announced that 4,000 units of the Inspira were sold nationwide since its launch in November.

Proton managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said the public response was tremendous and showed that "the model has managed to inspire many and fulfilled their ambition to own their dream car."

ins2.jpg
Syed Zainal Abidin said Proton also plans to bring to production a 'Pahlawan' (Warrior) model for the domestic market though he did not say which of the five concept cars would actually be made.

He was here to launch the Proton 1Malaysia Festival on Sunday.

The so-called 'Pahlawan' series made their debut at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2010, which ran from Dec 3 to Dec 12.

According to the 2010 Year-End Zeitgeist report released by Google on Dec 9, the Inspira was the year’s most popular search over Google among Malaysians.

The report said “not even Apple’s iPad and the Greatest Show on Earth - the Fifa World Cup 2010 come close” to the hype generated by the Proton Inspira.

Google recorded a meteoric spike of queries on the Inspira when it was previewed in October, which was enough to knock off the iPad for the number one spot, although the latter was introduced to the world in January.

3D PRINTING OFFERS GLIMPSE INTO FUTURE OF MANUFACTURING

XYZ-RGB's new ScannerKiller service takes two ordinary digital pictures of CEO Helmut Kungl, and merges them together using proprietary technology to create a 3-D data file, which can be used by animators or video-game developers in their products.

XYZ-RGB's new ScannerKiller service takes two ordinary digital pictures of CEO Helmut Kungl, and merges them together using proprietary technology to create a 3-D data file, which can be used by animators or video-game developers in their products.

OTTAWA — For one Ottawa entrepreneur, creating a hot new product was as simple as pressing a button.
With a special 3D printer at his disposal, Helmut Kungl, chief executive of XYZ-RGB Inc., was able to prototype, refine, patent and create working versions of a sleeve for an iPhone 4 without ever leaving the office.
"It's like a Star Trek replicator," said Kungl. "File goes in, physical part comes out."
3D printing offers a glimpse into the future of manufacturing - something that will change everything from medicine to how we make automobiles. Companies are using 3D printers to make components for space shuttles, produce car parts and even print human tissue.
The devices use cutting-edge plastics, metals and other materials to create an object based on a computer-created model.
The creator draws an object or device using a computer program, then hits "print." From there the machine goes to work, slowly spraying a thin layer based on the shape of the object. Layer after layer is applied until the desired object has been produced.
Printing times vary, but, in Kungl's case, one of his iPhone accessories takes up to three hours to complete.
The technology is quickly being adopted by the world's design community, which is using 3D printing technology to speed product development times. The technology means companies will no longer have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to make tools and dies for prototypes.
One company that is taking full advantage of 3D printers is Manitoba's Kor Ecologic. The company has designed a new gas/electric hybrid vehicle called the Urbee, the car's body (glass panels included) were made using a 3D printing technology called Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM).
"FDM lets us eliminate tooling, machining and handwork, and it brings incredible efficiency when a design change is needed. If you can get a pilot run without any tooling, you have advantages," said Jim Kor, chief executive of Kor Ecologic, in a release.
The Urbee was on display at the 2010 SEMA Show, a trade show dedicated to specialty automobiles, in Las Vegas last month.
The car, which is not yet ready for full-scale production, gave companies a glimpse at the massive change in manufacturing processes that are coming over the next decade.
The technology touches more than just manufacturing. Organovo, a company from San Diego, California, is using it to build human tissue and organs that can be used to help save a person's life when donor organs or tissue cannot be found.
Earlier this month, the company announced it had used a variation of a 3D printer, called the NovoGen MMX Bioprinter, to print blood vessels.
"Scientists and engineers can use the 3D bio printers to enable placing cells of almost any type into a desired pattern," said Keith Murphy, chief executive of Organovo, in a release. "Researchers can place liver cells on a preformed scaffold, support kidney cells with a co-printed scaffold ... ultimately the idea would be for surgeons to have tissue on demand for various uses."
The company's printer was recently named as one of the Best Innovations of 2010 by Time magazine.
Even in the home, 3D printing is making inroads. Manufacturers are pushing to get 3D printers into the hands of average consumers in hopes they will spark a boom in desktop manufacturing.
The idea is people will be able to print their own toys, tools or replacement parts at home, thanks to a 3D printing device. If a person needs a wrench, he or she can simply download the plans off the Internet and make one at home. If the battery cover on a cellphone breaks, the consumer can simply print another.
While prices for industrial 3D printers range from $50,000 to well over $200,000, models geared to consumers are already available starting at around $500.
The idea of being able to manufacture his own replacement parts for camera gear is what sparked Ottawa's Kungl to spend around $50,000 on a 3D printer about a year ago.
Kungl's company, XYZ-RGB, is in the business of capturing and processing 3D images. The company's 3D image files have been used in movies such as G.I. Joe, Public Enemies, Lord of the Rings and King Kong.
His company designs much of its own gear and is always losing or breaking various components, which is why the 3D printer was a coveted asset for his business.
He stumbled upon the design for the iPhone sleeve while trying to figure out a way to use the camera in the iPhone 4 to capture 3D photos.
Kungl's iPhone sleeve, which is already in demand at Ottawa area retailers, has been designed to incorporate a mount for a tripod, so that iPhone owners can take pictures and video with no need to hold the device.
Kungl explained that holding a phone isn't a good way to capture high quality images required for 3D purposes. So, pulling on his background as an industrial design graduate from Carleton University, he created a bumper case for the iPhone 4 that incorporates a slot to allow for the tripod mount.
He then used the company's 3D printer to make the case. As soon as his staff members saw it, they all wanted one of their own.
"The guys started asking for it. Then they showed a friend and they showed some friends. I have run out of materials," he said, adding that he has already sold more than 150 of the cases at a price of $23 each.
Camera stores have offered to stock the bumper and a supplier of camera parts from Toronto has even offered to represent Kungl in order to take his cases global.
"I wish I could have had it out in time for Christmas," said Kungl, adding now that he has been through six revisions of the sleeve, thanks to his 3D printer, he is working with a manufacturer to make plastic moulds of the device so he can begin full-scale manufacturing. Kungl hopes to have the sleeves on store shelves by February.
